Introductory class in fossil hunting and paleontology. Recommended for 5-Administration. There is an introductory class for planning the field trip. Fossils to be hunted are discussed and displayed. Identification and preparation are discussed along with basic paleontology and geology. Info on tools, clothing and safety are discussed. The field trips are to local road cuts, quarries or streams.
Fossil Quarry
Fossiliferous material is brought in to create your very own quarry. A section of the school property about 20 x 20 feet or larger if you are so inclined, is set aside for what amounts to an organized sand box surrounded by boulders chocked full of fossils. Different substrates are used from different time periods. The site is "seeded" with fossils from the time periods represented. Fossils will also weather naturally out of the surrounding material. This is an excellent addition to an outdoor classroom or nature walk. The possibilities are endless.
School Excavation Site
School specific or system specific sites could be developed. The site is passed down from class to class, or used year after year by your school or organization. This allows for ongoing research exploring natural forces at work. One of the greatest benefits could be actual scientific discovery. It is not uncommon for amateurs to discover new species of a particular fossil plant or animal. This could be the scientific method at its best for your school. Imagine a fossil named after your school or one of your students.
